The show lives and breathes in the grey area, and it leaves the moral judgments to the viewer. Set in Baltimore (a city where Simon had the greatest familiarity) and with the blessing of the city’s mayor, the show took an unflinching look at the intersection of police investigations, criminal organizations, social issues, and the politics in between. After making a bunch of low-level busts at Franklin Terrace, the task force find themselves unable to get anyone to testify against Barksdale's crew. With each passing week, "The Wire" blossomed, quietly becoming one of the smartest, most engrossing series on television. Most police dramas would focus simply on the work of the detail, and would barely acknowledge the criminal organization or the political factors guiding and obstructing the investigation. It would be an exaggeration to say the show is wholly nonchalant about Omar and Greggs’ sexuality. This behavior is greeted a severe beat-down by Greggs and two more cops inside the interrogation room. With the first season of The Wire, creator David Simon uses the investigation into a notorious drug dealer to tell the story of an entire city. Omar is also, it should be noted, gay, as is one of the show’s other standout characters, Detective Kima Greggs (Sonja Sohn). The cops hang a charge over a criminal’s head and the criminal either agrees to inform or they go to jail. Almost every aspect of the dark side of modern society is touched on, but without any preachy editorializing. Daniels serves as a bridge between Baltimore’s political power brokers and his detectives. Wallace (Michael B. Omar is, like McNulty, a tremendously colorful and charming figure -- and a hell of an investigator, to boot -- but an episode like this, with the murder of Stinkum and Kima's realization that Omar probably didn't directly witness the Gant killing, is a reminder of the shady moral territory the cops enter when they deal with someone like him. Nevertheless, The Wire soon developed a reputation that transcended the cop genre. Bubbles (Andre Royo) gets a glimpse of McNulty's complicated life when, on a rare trip to the suburbs, he sees the addled cop arguing with his ex-wife.

Club made up to celebrate the birth of its television savior, The Wire—rolled around every December, I never received gifts. It’s not that I think I’m too good to watch Law & Order. It's like the writers just thought it was funny. I don't know how it took a pandemic for me to finally watch this show, but I'm ecstatic that I finally watched it. Baltimore is not just a stand-in for Western civilization or globalized urban rot or the American inner city now given the cold federal shoulder in the folly-filled war on terror, though it is certainly all these things. The show rarely, if ever, took a hard stance on characters simply being “good” or “evil”, although some were portrayed as more admirable than others.
McNulty and Greggs finally meet up with Omar and his boyfriend. Reddick’s performance is a masterpiece of barely suppressed rage.

D'Angelo gets off, despite testimony from one eyewitness, after another witness changes her story. McNulty's ex-wife, Elena (Callie Thorne), calls him into court to limit his custody rights after she finds out about his using their young sons to follow Stringer. Like the Avon Barksdale investigation, it’s built piece-by-piece.

When Daniels (Lance Reddick) is pressured by McNulty to go over Rawls' head to save their case, Rawls sets out to destroy McNulty.

McNulty (Dominic West) tells the judge (Peter Gerety) about it, hoping he'll get the department to devote more resources to their investigation.

A drunken Bunk later tells McNulty, "You're no good for people, man.". When Omar's "loose cannon" behavior jeopardizes the operation, McNulty, Greggs, and Freamon (Clarke Peters) call him in and politely ask him to back off.

Like the Avon Barksdale investigation, it's built piece-by-piece. It's clear to McNulty that his superiors will be happy with a few low-level busts. So we'll get one review today, and another one in the regularly-scheduled Friday morning timeslot. -- and how are upholders of a strict legal code supposed to operate around that? Early on, we get him out with D'Angelo and the guys at the crab shack, having a good time, cracking jokes and getting made fun of for his affection for the too-hot hot sauce. And the series did not (IMO) really become brilliant (though it was excellent) until season 2.
