The drive is beautiful and there’s some great climbing rocks along the way I only did the first half after the climbing rocks in the road very nice and easy for a car to drive on. lots of flowers & wildlife. We are not well seasoned ORVers and our kids are still small (one drank two bottles on this drive) we really enjoyed it. 4WD trucks can make it just fine and you can still hike in (~3.5 miles walk). Bring your mountain bike or dirt bike, your binoculars and bird book, climbing shoes and crash pad, a camper van or tent. Conditions at the Happy and Sad boulders are normal except much busier due to the Buttermilks closure. It is totally OK to drive up these roads as long as you don't drive in the brush next to the road or get stuck. 4WD trucks can make it just fine and you can still hike in (~3.5 miles walk). There are several small stream crossings, meadows, and lush green forested areas that are worth stopping to take several breaks. I have never been so beaten up after a ride, or so happy to be back on pavement! Good moderate trail in August w areas to drive off of and hike or climb if you want to. General SUV was only fine till rock climbing area. I was hoping to get out there in late march. The scenery was amazing and made the trip well worth it. However, the ever changing landscape, terrain, and incredible Sierra Nevada scenery and views more than made up for that. 395 is open but has had some temporary closures recently due to flooding. The first few miles have some washboard but the rest of the trail had a variety of scenery and terrain. the road is damaged, dont damage it even further.

Jeeps are okay but Ford Raptors might get some scratches. Has a bit of everything . go to the tablelands and dont drive up buttermilk road! Follow Highway 186 West from Bishop for 8 miles and turn right onto Buttermilk road.
